Pratt & Whitney in Florida — West Palm Beach Government Products Division

Pratt & Whitney’s Florida Research and Development Center (later the Government Products Division; today part of RTX/Pratt & Whitney) was established in 1958 on a 7,000-acre tract in West Palm Beach (Palm Beach County), Florida, to conduct engine testing that could not be co-located with the East Hartford Connecticut campus. The West Palm Beach site allegedly ran high-thrust military turbofan test cells (TF30, F100, F119, F135), the RL10 liquid-hydrogen upper-stage rocket engine program (acquired by P&W’s earlier work and continued through today), and specialty military-engine assembly and overhaul. Test-cell operations, cryogenic-fuel handling, and rocket-engine hot-fire stands operated continuously through the asbestos era with a large in-house and contractor workforce.

Premises ACM Narrative

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Pratt & Whitney’s West Palm Beach premises allegedly involved:

  • Asbestos-block and asbestos-blanket insulation lining engine test cells, exhaust augmenters, and rocket hot-fire test stands
  • Asbestos-fabric hot-section lagging on turbofan combustor sections and afterburner assemblies during test-cell instrumentation
  • Asbestos pipe covering on cryogenic-adjacent utility piping, steam mains, and hot-oil systems servicing the sprawling test complex
  • Asbestos-sheet gaskets and rope packing at high-temperature test-rig flanges, valves, and combustor connections
  • Asbestos-block insulation on plant powerhouse boilers and process-utility equipment
  • Asbestos sprayed fireproofing on structural steel in pre-1973 assembly and test buildings
  • Asbestos-cement panels on test-cell and utility structures

Workers Exposed

Plaintiffs allegedly included:
